Brief History of the department

The glorious history of chemistry department goes back to the inception of this college in the year 1955. The department started with the UG course and was graced by Sri. D. D. Lal as the first head of the department with Dr. P. P. Singh as second faculty. Since, the department came into existence, it has been enriched by excellent academicians and researchers like Dr. P. P. Singh (DSc, FNASc), Dr I M Pandey, Dr A K Srivastava, Dr M K Singh, Dr S A Khan, Dr U P Shukla, Dr P K Pandey, Dr P P Agarwal, Dr S P Yadav, Dr S B Sharma, Dr N P Singh to name a few. Under the capable leadership of Dr. P. P. Singh, the department has seen considerable growth and PG programme was introduced in year 1970 by the DDU Gorakhpur University Gorakhpur.

The department also has rich history in carrying out research work which has been established in late sixties and carried forward by the distinguished alumni and current generations of faculty members. It is worth to mention the immense contribution by Dr. P. P. Singh who had international collaboration with Prof. R. Rivest (University of Toronto, Canada) and published research papers of international repute. During his tenure, he also visited many foreign universities in connection to his research. In addition, Dr A K Srivastava and Dr. U. P. Shukla also brought prestige to the department by visiting University of Toronto, Canada in connection to their respective research works.

The faculty members of the department has published approx 300 research papers in peer reviewed journals of high standards like Journal of Inorganic Chemistry, Journal of NuclInorg Chem, Canadian Journal of Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Coordination Chemistry, Journal of Molecular Structure, Polyhedron, Bioorganic Medicinal Chemistry, Journal of American Chemical Society, ChemCom, Carbon, Chemistry European Journal, Dalton Trans. Spectrochem Acta, Journal of Nanotechnology, Journal of desalination and waste water treatment, International Journal of Quantum Chemistry, Chemical Biology and Drug Design, Medicinal Chemistry Research etc.

The department has served as an emblematic example for students coming from various states and backgrounds for pursuing PhD program despite being established in one of the backward areas of North-Eastern UP. The department has been able to guide more than 150 research scholars who have been awarded PhD degree. The department has also been recognized by various funding agencies like DST, UGC, CSIR, Department of Environment; Government of India, CST-UP which awarded various major research projects.

The hard work put-in-forth by faculty & other staff members and students has seen students from our department receiving Chancellors Medal, thus, carrying forward the legacy of our department.
