Brief History of the Department of English

The College was established by the hon’able Maharaja Balrampur Sri. Maharaja Pateshwari Prasad Singh in the memory of his loving mother Maharani Lal Kunwari in 1955. Since then, it has been growing in terms of infrastructure and competent faculties. The Department was established with under graduation program and since the commencement of the department, it has been headed under the supervision of erudite scholar, Shri A.K. Chaturwedi followed subsequently by Shri Sadhu Saran Mishra and Dr. Ramesh Kumar Shukla (current Head). The Department was also assisted by the eminent scholar and versatile genius Shri I. D. Singh. At present the department runs research, post graduate and under graduate programs. The department has a rich tradition of high-level teaching which continues even today. It has been working towards enhancing and regulating literary culture by teaching in areas such as British Literature, American literature, Elementary Linguistic, New literature in English, Literary criticism and theory, Indian and European Classical Literature, Indian Literature and Translation and so on and so forth. The department offers functional, value-added courses and introduced Language Lab in 2018 to develop communication skills among students. The course contents have kept pace with the new trends of critical thought in the academic field.
