Brief History of the Department

The Department of Mathematics was started at undergraduate level with the inception of the college in the year 1955. Sri R. K.Vaish was its first HOD and was the Principal of the college as well. Later on Sri Vaish relinquished the post of the HOD of Mathematics Department and Sri Harsukh Rai became the next HOD in the year 1958 and continued till June, 1995. During the tenure of Sri Harsukh Rai, post graduate programme was added to the department in the year 1971. It was the first institution of the Dr. R.M.L. Avadh University, Faizabad which started P.G. programme in Mathematics. Dr. J. B. Shukla and Dr. G.S. Agrawal who were undergraduate alumni of the department, became recipients of the prestigious Bhatnagar award. Later on Dr. J.B. Shukla served at I.I.T. Kanpur as professor and chairperson of the department of Mathematics and Dr. G.S. Agrawal served as professor/Head department of Physics and Electronics Central University Hyderabad. After the commencement of post graduate programme in Mathematics new faculties were recruited among which Dr. S.K. Dubey was appointed in 1971, later served as director, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Our first batch of P.G. alumni Dr. Hukum Singh served as professor and Head Department of Education in Science and Mathematics ,NCERT, Hauzkhas, New Delhi and a large number of students who obtained their post graduate degree in Mathematics from the institution are serving as officer in state/central government departments.

The second phase which served as a milestone in the upliftment of the department started in 1981 when research activities started and since then thirty two student have been awarded Ph.D. degree. Some of our students are serving as Assistant/Associate professors in various Government and Aided Colleges and Engineering Institutions of the state and a few of them are working in various Central Government/State government departments. The teachers of the department counsel the students about their careers as a result of which, half a dozen of our students have successfully qualified NET/JRF/SLET and few of them who qualified NET/JRF are Lavkush Pandey (2000), Deep Narayan Pandey (2004), M.S. Arora (2005), Gulmeet Khurana (2008) who later became an IPS and is presently serving as S.P. in Punjab, Ram Murti (2010), Rajiv Kumar Srivastava (2012), Aradhana Verma (2017) , Anil Verma (2018) and Ved Mani (2019), Rishab Pandey (2022). We encourage our U.G. students as a result of which many of them have got admitted in I.I.Ts at P.G. level and a few of them qualified IIT-JAM who are, Aman Patel, Abhishek Pathak, Durgesh Soni, Vinay Kumar & Utkarsh Srivastava. It is quality teaching, which is imparted in the department that enables the students to be toppers in various universities. Some of them have been the recipient of Chancellor’s gold medal such as Mohit Dev Tripathi (2010), Sakshi Agrwal (2017), Ravi Prakash Yadav (2019), Shubhi Pandey (2021) and Vivek Verma (2022). The department has its own library for P.G. students.
